Case study Rab: “International Summer School: Digitizing, Studying and Sharing Architectural Heritage” – September 27th – October 4th 2015

The International summer school “Digital recording, study and public sharing of historical architectures: the city of Rab (Croatia)”, organised by A. Chavarria, University of Padova, is a continuation of former activities in different projects (The transformation of the historical landscape of the island of Rab, University of Zagreb grant, 2014, and the LLP Erasmus Intensive programme: IntSYSTEM, Integrated systems of sources, technologies and methods – remote sensing of historical landscape funded by the EU commission, 2014), and archaeological excavations conducted on the island since 2005 (Kaštelina, Sv. Damjan, Rab, Banjol). Rab has thus become a case study for the implementation of new methodologies and new technologies in research. The summer school is strongly embedded in the CROMART project, involving three project members (A. Chavarria, G. P. Brogiolo, M. Jurković).

The aim of the school was not only the training of young colleagues and students in new technologies, but mainly – while explaining – doing the actual research. The thermal camera was used all over the town of Rab, discovering hidden layers of medieval architecture. Many of the houses were catalogued, documented with series of photos using photographic rectification to enable the photogrammetry of the buildings.

At the same time a mobile application was created, filled with information on monuments of Rab. It is a storytelling animated application imagined to walk a person through the town, explaining architecture and urbanism in different layers – from amateurs to experts. The application was a success, and work on filling it with information is going on.
