From June the 1st to the 24th the project team members Morana Čaušević Bully, Sébastien Bully and Miljenko Jurković conducted the 2016 campaign of archaeological research of the abbey of St Peter in Osor, island of Cres. The program is the result of cooperation between the French CNRS (UMR ARTeHIS) and IRCLAMA from 2006, and the Ecole française de Rome from 2012, financed mostly by the French Ministère des affaires étrangères et européennes, the Croatian Ministry of Culture, the Ecole française de Rome, the foundation Caritas Veritatis, and incorporated to the CROMART project.
This year’s campaign was focused on the vestibule of the three nave basilica from the 11th century. The findings in the zone were those expected – some fragments of the façade sculpture. But the intriguing part of this year’s excavation is the liturgical division of the vestibule: it is tripartite, only the central part functioning as a real vestibule, with the entrances, and separated from the sides by pilasters and arches. Structures found in the northern and southern part of the vestibule are to be analysed, but already they offer amazing data for understanding the liturgical uses of such lateral spaces.
Further talks with the representatives of the town of Mali Lošinj were held in order to establish the priorities and funding of the creation of an archaeological park in Osor, a goal very important to the CROMART project.
