From September 18th to October 2nd 2016, the project team members M. Jurković, G. P. Brogiolo and Ranko Starac conducted further archaeological research on the island of Rab. The excavations were conducted at three locations on the island.
The main goal at the first location, the inner courtyard of a restaurant, was the conservation of an antique stove, which was discovered in the campaign held from the 5th to the 12th of June of the same year. In the period from 20th to 22nd of September, in an inner courtyard of a restaurant, removal and conservation works of the antique stove were carried. The workers from the restoration company “Ars restauro” d.o.o. from Sinj, under the supervision of conservator Mia Rizner (Conservation Department of Rijeka) conducted the removal and conservation process.
Further research was conducted on the second location, the monastic garden of the Benedictine nunnery of St. Andrew in the city of Rab. Its goal was to determine the boundaries of already discovered medieval, and possibly classical and late antique structures with a 1st c. roman mosaic. A group of students from Zagreb and Padua Universities, under the supervision of the archaeologist G. Bilogrivić, excavated and catalogued the findings (ceramics, metalwork and sculpture) found while exploring archaeological layers.
Since one of the main goals of the CROMART project is the tracking and mapping of the transformations of the historical landscape of the island, the third location was situated in front of the church of the Benedictine abbey of St Peter in Supetarska draga. The systematic research of an early medieval burial ground, under the supervision of R. Starac (project team member), was continued. The research resulted in the remains of earlier and later structures, and it will be continued in June of 2017.
