The latest, 22nd issue of the Hortus Artium Medievalium, annual journal of the International Research Center for Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, University of Zagreb, has been presented to the public on June 3rd 2016, during the Center’s 23rd International colloquium iz Zadar, Croatia.
The largest part of the volume gathers papers presented a year before in Poreč, during the 22nd IRCLAMA colloquium – topic Mobility of Artists, Transfer of Forms, Functions, Works of Art and Ideas in Medieval Mediterannean Europe: the Role of the Ports – thus presenting a milestone of the second year of the namesake CROMART project, financed by the Croatian Science Foundation.
The introduction to the volume, by X. Barral I Altet clearly states the importance of the topic in understanding the mobility in a large time span, from late antiquity to the end of the middle ages. Thirty three papers deal with problems gathered around four main research topics: the role of Adriatic ports, the relation between Venice and Byzantium, materials and marble in Late Antiquity and the artist trade in the Middle Ages.
Ending with its standard blocks: Varia, containing newest research results and Book reviews, Hortus Artium Medievalium continues to firmly stand not only as one of the most important links between Croatian and European medieval studies, but also as one of the world’s most potent centers of exploration of medieval heritage, therefore being an invaluable contribution to the CROMART project. It contains four contributions from project team members (Barral, Cirelli, Riccioni and Brogiolo), and was presented in Zadar by another project team member, Ivan Matejčić, together with Imma Lores.
