From September 27th till October 11th 2015 the second archaeological campaign incorporated to the CROMART project was conducted on the island of Rab, continuing the excavations of the late antique church of St Lawrence in Banjol (funded partly by the Croatian Ministry of Culture), and the structures in the inner courtyard of the „Kuća rapske torte“ (funded partly by the University of Padova). In parallel, further research was conducted on urbanism of Rab, within the International summer school (organized by the University of Padova), and the project The transformation of the historical landscape of the Quarnero islands (University of Zagreb grant 2015). Those activities involved project team members A. Chavarria, G. P. Brogiolo, M. Jurković, R. Starac, P. Marković, M. Bradanović, as well as a group of students from Padova and Zagreb universities, and G. Bilogrivić, archaeologist.
The excavation in the courtyard of “Kuća rapske torte” produced a blacksmiths facility from late antiquity (fig. 1), by which was later on, probably during wars between Goths and Byzantium in the 6th c. constructed a defensive wall, changing our knowledge of the urbanism development in Rab.
The excavation of St Lawrence in Banjol produced the plan of the first late antique church, longer than the cathedral in Rab, as well as more architectural sculpture (fig. 2) of high quality, raising the questions of the investor and transfer of works of art.
During the summer school, further research was conducted on architecture in Rab, using new technologies – this time a thermo camera (fig. 3), giving very important results in understanding the transformations of some buildings in the “longue durée”.
