Monastery of St Peter, Osor – excavations 2017, June 12th-30th

From June 12th to 30th the project team members Morana Čaušević Bully, Sébastien Bully and Miljenko Jurković conducted the 2017 campaign of archaeological research of the abbey of St Peter in Osor, island of Cres. The program is the result of cooperation between the French CNRS (UMR ARTeHIS) and IRCLAMA from 2006, and the Ecole française de Rome from 2012, financed mostly by the French Ministère des affaires étrangères et européennes, the Croatian Ministry of Culture, the Ecole française de Rome, the foundation Caritas Veritatis, and incorporated to the CROMART project. This year’s campaign was the last of the first cycle: the excavation of the church of St Peter has ended. The activities will now focus on the preparation of the first monograph of the church on one side, and on conservation works on the other, before starting the second excavations cycle concerning the cloister and other annexes of the monastery.

The first volume will deal with the site, the transformations of the site prior to the establishment of the monastery, and with the church itself. As the final goal is the creation of an archaeological park in Osor, the next step is the elaboration of a conservation programme for the church which will eventually become a new multifunctional space – the new lapidarium museum and concert venue, retaining its ecclesiastical function. As to fulfil that goal, important for the CROMART project, new cooperation has been established with the local museum and the representatives of the town of Mali Lošinj.
