From June 12th to 30th the project team members Morana Čaušević Bully, Sébastien Bully and Miljenko Jurković conducted the 2017 campaign of archaeological research of the abbey of St Peter in Osor, island of Cres. The program is the result of cooperation between the French CNRS (UMR ARTeHIS) and IRCLAMA from 2006, and the Ecole française de Rome from 2012, financed mostly by the French Ministère des affaires étrangères et européennes, the Croatian Ministry of Culture, the Ecole française de Rome, the foundation Caritas Veritatis, and incorporated to the CROMART project. Case study Rab – excavations 2017, May 29th – June 12th
Under the supervision of project team members M. Jurković, G.P. Brogiolo, A. Chavarria and R. Starac, the international team has continued the series of archaeological researches on the island of Rab with the most recent campaign which was held from May 29th to June 12th 2017. It included the continuation of excavations in the town center, on a site known as “Kuća rapske torte” which has provided exceptionally fruitful archaeological finds in the last two years. Given the fact the single urban center of the island has been continuously populated for more than 2000 years, the importance of excavations conducted on such a site is unquestionable. New archaeological excavation has been conducted in a town’s public park “Dorka”. The research of still visible remains of one of the numerous examples of medieval religious architecture highly concentrated in the town center’s peninsula, has been carried out.

24th IRCLAMA colloquium, Pula, May 25th-28th 2017
CARE (Corpus architecturae religiosae europeae, IV – X saec.) – Meaning and use of corpora: 24th IRCLAMA International Symposium in Pula, Croatia
The Colloquium was held in the Historical and Maritime Museum of Istria in Pula from 25th to 28th of May 2017 gathering once again over a hundred specialists in the fields of archaeology, art history, history and medieval studies from all over Europe and the United States with 57 given papers. The topic of the colloquium was CARE, an international project led by G.P. Brogiolo and M. Jurković, aiming to publish a corpus of European ecclesiastical architecture from late antiquity and the early middle ages. It is as well one of the main goals of the CROMART project.

Monastery of St Mary the Great near Bale, Istria – excavations 2016, October 11th-23rd
The excavations of the monastery of St Mary the Great in Istria continued from the 11th to the 23rd of October 2016. During the campaign, archaeologists have been clearing vegetation and excavating the remains of the western perimeter wall of the monastery complex. Under the supervision of archaeologists, construction company specialized in heritage building conservation has been simultaneously working on the conservation of the western wall in order to preserve it and to present it as an integral structure of the vast monastery complex.
Carolingian fortified settlement Guran, Istria – excavations 2016, October 11th-23rd
The excavations of the fortified settlement Guran in southern Istria continued from October 11th to 23rd. The aim of this campaign was to continue the tracking of the western rampart wall towards south, and document its connection to the inner layout of the settlement.
The importance of Guran for the CROMART project is essential for the understanding of the transformations of the medieval landscape in a micro region in the long lasting period from the Carolingian rule till the end of the Middle Ages, when the settlement was abandoned.
Training school in Poreč: Innovation in intelligent management of heritage buildings, September 26th-29th 2016
The Training School Innovation in Intelligent Management of Heritage Buildings, organized by COST was hosted by the PI of the CROMART project and the director of IRCLAMA, M. Jurković, from the 26th to the 29th September 2016. It is the result of cooperation between the European project COST Action: TD1406 and the CROMART project, financed by the Croatian Science Foundation.
The Training School was held in the museum ZAVIČAJNI MUZEJ POREŠTINE – MUSEO DEL TERRITORIO, in the city of Poreč and on a historical and archaeological site near the town of Bale. The aim of the Training School was to gather scientists, professors, conservationists and students from different research and technology fields and assorted European institutions, with the goal of educating and presenting their works in the fields of management, conservation and presentation of Heritage buildings.
Case study Rab – excavations 2016, September 18th – October 2nd
From September 18th to October 2nd 2016, the project team members M. Jurković, G. P. Brogiolo and Ranko Starac conducted further archaeological research on the island of Rab. The excavations were conducted at three locations on the island.
The main goal at the first location, the inner courtyard of a restaurant, was the conservation of an antique stove, which was discovered in the campaign held from the 5th to the 12th of June of the same year. In the period from 20th to 22nd of September, in an inner courtyard of a restaurant, removal and conservation works of the antique stove were carried. The workers from the restoration company “Ars restauro” d.o.o. from Sinj, under the supervision of conservator Mia Rizner (Conservation Department of Rijeka) conducted the removal and conservation process.
